What is a Dissertation

The word “dissertation” comes from the Greek, which means “to put” and refers to an intellectual sentence.

The word “dissertation” was sometimes used to describe a treatise relating to the acquisition of an academic degree. Most institutions require students to write a dissertation on the work as primary material. However, the term is also used for general assertions, essays, and similar works.

The term “dissertation” is often used interchangeably with “the final project” presented by a doctoral student to obtain his or her doctorate.

How Students Choose a Dissertation

The student develops an original contribution to a selected field of study through several theses or essays that are understood as a dissertation body. According to the committee’s decision, a dissertation may be approved or rejected by a scientific committee consisting of a dissertation leader and an evaluator. The dissertation should reach at least the academic degree the candidate is aiming for.

Students will then formulate a prospectus. The prospectus provides a common structure and process for identifying a viable dissertation project, forming a dissertation committee, articulating his or her project in the form of a prospectus and, where appropriate, developing a grant application based on the prospectus. The proposal is at the heart of the grant application.

The faculty member supervising the dissertation is either an associate or a full professor and the first holder of the chair. The dissertation, like any other written paper, such as an essay review, is asked to select a topic and define the questions to be answered.

Sufficient time for planning and structuring your written work during your studies is important, but even more important is that you prepare thoroughly when it comes to your dissertation. Whether it is your bachelor, master or doctoral thesis, you’re preparing for something, and the following tips will help you stay on track.

How Do Dissertations Help Shape Society

The dissemination of knowledge, writings and literature is how we grow and move forward as a society. Dissertations give us a glimpse into the mind of altruistic future leads of America. So it is very important that we have a collection of dissertations – this helps share ideas, promulgate knowledge and ultimately help shape society.

After students write their dissertation, they are held in digital cloud type system like ProQuest Dissertations database and made available to university libraries, researchers, and the general public. This is in addition to publicizing the dissertation in whole or in part.

The dissertation(s) is published in whole or in part prior to the award of the doctorate, but students may choose to delay full public access for at least five (5) years. Dissertations will be subject to Web search and unrestricted download in the spirit of disseminating new knowledge, which is a hallmark of higher education, although students may request to opt out of this service so that the dissertation is not available for download outside of your University.

Understanding copyright law is a crucial aspect of how you write your dissertation. Students writing a thesis or dissertation should understand Copyright Law and if the student feels the need to, to implore their University for help.

Review the practical requirements of your educational program. Choosing the topic of your dissertation, or research project is the first step to ensure that your research is as smooth as possible. Your dissertation will come out better if you write on a subject you enjoy, have knowledge of and is a passion of yours.

The easiest way to ensure that your research is relevant is to choose a topic that is related to current issues that are being discussed in society as a whole and in your academic discipline. If your topic is reproductive rights in South America, you should analyze public policy documents and media coverage and collect original data from interviews and surveys. It is important that your topic is interesting to you, but you should also make sure that it is relevant.

The first major challenge of the dissertation process is the selection of a dissertation topic. For most doctoral students, the decision is an agonizing one because of the uncertainty involved.

When you reach the point where you are writing your dissertation, you are at the end of an important phase of your educational journey. The purpose of the essay is to present your skills and capacities for conducting research in your chosen discipline, present the results in original content, and offer value to the academic and scientific community. One must make the work so interesting that other scientific papers can be published.

For example, let’s say I knew I wanted to write a dissertation on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and it’s ability to learn and adapt. So I turned to the chair of my doctoral program and asked for the opportunity to take an independent or elective course that would allow me to build on my literature research, pilot studies, and funding opportunities on the subject. If you wish, you can carry out literature research and pilot projects in your preparatory courses, but your dissertation should be conducted independently.

Remember, reading and writing a dissertation is not the same as actually writing it. A dissertation presupposes that you carry out original research in your field, based on the existing literature.

For example, when writing a qualitative dissertation, you are exposed to research questions, attitudes, participants, data collection and data analysis processes. The dissertation describes the purpose, background, methods and conclusions of the original research project. In each chapter of the dissertation, the dissertation focuses on how you localized resources, methods, implementation, and results.

A doctoral thesis is a research document that makes a significant and original contribution to the existing knowledge in a discipline. Also known as a doctoral dissertation in some countries, it is used as a final thesis for a doctorate; in other countries, the doctoral dissertation and thesis are interchangeable, and both are research projects completed as part of a bachelor’s or postgraduate program. A dissertation allows students to present their results in response to questions and suggestions that they choose themselves.

A dissertation is the last project that doctoral students submit to obtain their doctorate. The aim of a dissertation is to test the independent research skills that students have acquired during their time at the university, and these assessments determine their final grades.

It is vital to find your research topic interesting and meaningful, a topic that fits your career goals and is important to the wider academic community, says Dr Alex Patel, a learning development consultant at the Learning Institute of the University of Leicester. [Sources: 2]

Why It Is Important That Society And Government Have Public Discussion And Open Debate

Dissertations are written from the minds of smart students who want to better society and spread freedom and personal choice. Without the First Amendment in America, there would be censorship of free speech on University Campuses. Dissertations would become nothing more than an essay your University wants you to write – not what you, the student, who has your own ideas and passions, want to write.

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1907 noted that the Fourteenth Amendment embodied a prohibition like the First Amendment.

In the court case First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, First Amendment speech is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the Federal Constitution. This right is defensible against state regulations that evaporate what may or would be conflict with the protection of individuals, press media and corporations under the free speech clause. The court wrote in Bellotti that the issue was not only the constitutional right of corporations whose speeches were to be protected by the First Amendment, but also whether that speech had social significance.

The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, thought and investigation and advocates respect for the rights of others to do the same. It protects public institutions from having to compromise the ideals of free speech and creates a framework for the definition of critical rights and responsibilities. Therefore it is so important to have a free-flowing sharing of ideas and knowledge, not censorship, when it comes to dissertations. [Sources: 6]

Free speech is a matrix of indispensable conditions for all other forms of freedom, Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo said more than 80 years ago. Countless other judges, commentators, philosophers, and others have spoken about the important role that freedom of speech plays in promoting and upholding democracy eloquently over the decades. In the 227 years since the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution were ratified with the Bill of Rights in 1791, debate has continued about the importance of the First Amendment and its companion, freedom of the press.

By making dissertations public, it markets ideas to society that help form ideas for the future. In the public sphere, dissertations help form rhetorical exchange based on a shared awareness of common issues, common interests, and tendencies, insofar as the strength of the differences and convergence between self-constitutions and public opinion is reflected in the organization of society.

Censorship is a form of political control, and the media is used to serve the interests of the political parties. As Chan (2003, p. 159) states, the media are seen as an important part of the Chinese government’s ideological apparatus, used to advance party interests, stabilize government and regime, and control public opinion (cf. Hassid 2008; Wang and Ang 2010). Through regulation, control, and censorship, the government defines certain information as sensitive or harmful, prevents it from appearing in public, and discourages or prohibits the public from participating in debates.

Society thrives on freedom and free speech. This brings me to the study of Sociology. Sociology is the study of conditions such as citizenship and power. Let us look at a Communist China, which has strict free speech laws in place today.

The corruption and government tyranny are so bad in China that a civil-society groups, media owners and former officials in countries where Chinese influence is growing have begun to speak out, urging their governments to adhere to standards of good governance when considering Chinese investment in the communication infrastructure. To shed light on current attitudes and the potential impact of online social interaction in the next decade, the Pew Research Center and the Imagine Internet Center at Elon University conducted large-scale advertising campaigns among technology experts, academics, business practitioners and government officials.

Media coverage of China’s growing global presence has focused on the country’s growing economic impact and potentially negative impact abroad. While these fears deserve sober reflection and policy responses, they threaten to overshadow the risks to democracy posed by the CCP’s growing global influence, including its efforts to use the media outside China to advance its agenda.

If China has its’ way, there will be no more First Amendment rights in America. Having a variety of dissertations topics and examples will dwindle away. That is why it is important to have freedom of speech in Public and on University Campuses and to have as many dissertations’ topics and examples as possible.
